The following legend is told by the people of Querétaro about the hill of Sangremal. In 1531 Fernando de Tapia ordered his troops to fight the indigenous Chichimeca army.

The battle occurred on the hill of Sangremal and in the middle of the brutal fighting when the Spanish were about to give up, a radiant light in the sky appeared. Behind the light a white and red cross appeared alongside St. James the apostle who was riding on his white horse.
