El Marqués

$2,000.00MN / PERSONA ADICIONAL $300.00 MN

Mr. Antonia de Urrutia y Arana, Marquis of the Villa del Villar de Águila, was a man from Queretaro who will forever be remembered as someone who did good deeds without looking for recognition. One of his greatest gifts to the city was providing access to drinking water.

He was born on November 30th, 1670 in the Valley of Llanteno (Spain) in the village of Arceniega located in the province of Álava. His pious parents raised him to know the ways of our holy Catholic religion. He married a woman from Querétaro Mrs. Josefa Paula Guerro Dávila Fernández de Corral. He inherited the title of marquis and manor from his uncle Mr. D. Juan Urrutia Tetis.

He contributed many beneficial things to the city of Querétaro, one of which was the aqueduct. It was originally his idea and he personally carried out its construction. In addition, he provided $88,287 that was needed to build a bridge made of quarry stone which is now called Puente Grande (Big Bridge). In the orchard of the Santa Cruz convent he created a large pond to benefit the community living there that is still there today. He gave $200 for water access to the PP Carmelitas. In addition, he went out personally with the prior of Santo Domingo to collect alms in the shops and plazas so that water could be brought directly to the convent. He funded fountains, wash basins and a pond for the Cappuchina nuns that still exists today.
He died on August 29th, 1743 after having received the holy sacraments. His body was buried in the church of Santo Domingo.
