As the wife of the chief magistrate of Querétaro, Doña Josefa is the one who gave notice to Father Hidalgo in the conspiracy against the Spanish government which was organized by the Criollos.

Josefa Ortíz de Dominquez was born in Valladolid (Morelia) in 1768. Upon becoming an orphan, her sister sent her to Mexico City to study in El Colegio de la Paz (a Basque school) in which criollo young women were taught how to do womens work.

She left the school campus at 23 years old to marry the lawyer Miguel Domínguez that would soon be named the magistrate of Querétaro. As an intelligent women with a foreceful character, la Corregidora Doña Josefa Ortíz de Dominguez embraced the cause for independence at the insistence of Ignacio Allende, her daughters fiancé. After the conspiracy of September 1810 was denounced, el Corregidor, as a governmental official of the viceroy, was obligated to apprehend all possible suspects. Before leaving his house for some errands, he trapped his wife inside her bedroom to keep her safe from any kind of danger. However, she was able to communicate with the mayor of Querétaro, who was also an informant for Hidalgo, Allende and Aldama. One of the royal guards betrayed her and she was imprisoned in the convent of Santa Clara. Later she was sent to México where she was seen as courageous by the jailers.

Because she was pregnant, she was treated with more consideration but after giving birth she was sent to Santa Catalina to serve time in prison to fulfill her three-year sentence. Once she was free, she publicly declared that she belonged to the mason party and considered herself a radical liberal. She condemned the killing at the Alhóndiga de Granaditas and the expulsion of Spaniards. She denied any recompenses, but the Querétaro congress named her a distinguished person on the state. She died in Mexico City in 1892 at 61 years of age.
